Royce F. Calhoun, M.D.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Royce F. Calhoun II, M.D., has brought his extensive expertise and multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of lung cancer and thoracic aortic disease to Rideout Memorial Hospital and the Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center.

"Royce Calhoun is a dynamic, pioneering surgeon who will be a wonderful addition to the multi-disciplinary team of physicians at Fremont-Rideout who are breaking ground in a variety of specialty medicine services. We couldn't be more pleased to have him join us," said Fremont-Rideout CEO Theresa Hamilton.

Dr. Calhoun has spent the last eight years at the University of California, Davis, where he was as an Associate Professor of Surgery and Surgical Director of the UCD Medical Center's Thoracic Oncology Program. The Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center is a member of the University of California Davis' Cancer Care Network. Dr. Calhoun will continue his many clinical trials and lung cancer research at Rideout.

Certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Calhoun performed the first minimally invasive lobectomy for lung cancer in Northern California in 2006 and is the most experienced thoracic surgeon in this technique in Northern California, having performed more than 300 of these cutting edge procedures. These minimally invasive procedures, known as Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), enables a surgeon to access the chest cavity via several small incisions without spreading or cutting ribs and with minimal cutting of muscle. Many different operations of the chest can be done this way, including the removal of lung cancer, the proven method of cure. Dr. Calhoun was an early adopter of this technique and calls it "a paradigm shift in the treatment of lung cancer." It allows the patient a much faster, less painful recovery from surgery and a significantly quicker return to normal function, as compared to the traditional "open" thoracotomy that requires a much larger incision, rib spreading/cutting, and significant cutting of muscle.

In 2008, Dr. Calhoun was a guest surgeon at an international conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he performed a VATS lobectomy before a large audience of Russian thoracic surgeons. Dr. Calhoun has published and spoken extensively on the topic of the treatment of early stage lung cancer, the number one cancer killer of men and women in the US and a disease with high rates of incidence in Yuba, Sutter and surrounding counties.

Dr. Calhoun was also an early adopter of another minimally invasive procedure, the stent-based minimally invasive approach to the treatment of thoracic aortic diseases such as traumatic tears, dissections and aneurysms, and led the way in establishing UC Davis as a nationally recognized program for Thoracic EndoVascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR). TEVAR is done through simple catheter access of the groin vessels with a stent then navigated to the area of the aorta in need of repair. The concept is very similar to a heart catheterization and the stent based treatment of diseased coronary arteries that feed the heart muscle. In many instances, TEVAR can replace the classic large chest incision and cardiopulmonary bypass that is traditionally required. Dr. Calhoun has published and presented on this topic nationally and internationally, and has performed more than 100 of these procedures, making him one of the most experienced TEVAR surgeons in Northern California.

Dr. Calhoun earned his medical degree from Emory University, received his general surgical training at Washington University and completed his cardiothoracic surgical residency at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His professional memberships include the American College of Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgical Society, the European Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the General Thoracic Surgery Club.
