What is a hospitalist?
At Fremont and Rideout Hospitals, we want you to receive the best care possible at every stage of your life and health.
During a hospital stay, you may be cared for by doctors who specialize in treating patients only in the hospital setting. Known as hospitalists, these doctors work with your physician to provide the medical attention you need.
Hopsitalists are specialized physicians who provide 24-hour care during your hospitalization. The hospitalists lead a team of physicians, nurses and social work case managers. Together they will work to make your hospital stay more comfortable so that you receive the quality care you would expect form the Rideout Health Group.
How does it work?
When your primary care or emergency physician determines a need for your admission to Fremont Medical Center or Rideout Memorial Hospital, he or she may request that the hospitalist team provide your inpatient care.
From admission to discharge, your care will be guided by this expert team. As a patient, you will have the benefit of a physician-led team that is on site at the hospital and available to you and your family at any hour of the night or day. Hospitalist physicians are generally on duty for 12 hour shifts. One shift covers days and the other nights.
Will my doctor stay involved?
Upon discharge, you will continue to see your primary care physician for care and treatment. If you do not have a primary care physician, you will need to arrange to establish one, since hospitalists generally do not follow patients outside the hospital. Hospital Care coordinators can help you with this if you would like.
Why a hospitalist?
The hospitalist concept began several years ago in response to the changing world of health care.
With office practices busier than ever, primary care physicians were finding it difficult to be immediately responsive to the needs of their hospitalized patients and at the same time, practice efficient office-based medicine.
Today, hospitalist programs are found at leading hospitals across the country. Your doctor rests easier knowing that you will receive the care you need when you need it at FRHG, by hospital based physicians.
What does a hospitalist mean to me?
As a patient, you will receive the attention you need from a physician whose practice is based at FRHG. You will have the benefit of a physician led team, that is available for you and your family. Even in the middle of the night, hospitalists will be available to respond to any changes that may occur. When you are able to leave the hospital, you will return to your family doctor for on-going care.
