Hospital and Rideout Pain Management Get Epidural Steroids Direct from Manufacturer
Rideout Health (RH) is reassuring the community that the current outbreak of a rare fungal meningitis reported so far in ten states will not affect patients in this area. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) identified the source of the infection as epidural injections of a contaminated steroid supplied by a Massachusetts-based pharmacy, the New England Compounding Center (NECC). No Rideout Health facility works with NECC.
Both Rideout Pain Management, (formerly known as Feather River Surgery & Pain Management), and Rideout Memorial Hospital, the two RH facilities where epidural steroid injections are performed, receive the medications for this procedure directly from the manufacturer in sterile single dose form.
No cases of this rare fungal meningitis have been reported in California to date. NECC prepared medications and shipped them to various pain centers across the country for use during epidural steroid injection procedures. Only four facilities in California are listed by the CDC as having received steroids from NECC; none is in the greater Sacramento area. More information about the meningitis outbreak may be found on the CDC website, www.cdc.gov/hai/outbreaks/meningitis.html
