Cancer Center receives prestigious designation

The University of California, Davis, Comprehensive Cancer Center, has received the National Cancer Institute's "comprehensive," designation, renowned as the world's most prestigious honor in oncology.

Only 41 cancer centers, fewer than 1 percent of all of those nationwide, have the designation, said Ralph deVere, White, MD, Director of the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, who made the announcement. UC Davis is the only cancer center in Sacramento and inland Northern California to have this honor.

The Rideout Cancer Center in Marysville is a joint venture between Rideout Health and UC Davis, and has served as a model for other advanced cancer care centers in the region, the foundation of the UC Davis Cancer Network. The affiliation allows the Rideout Health to work directly with UC Davis personnel to guarantee the best cancer treatment available without having to leave the area.

"What this means to me is that UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center is truly breaking barriers to beat cancer. We look forward to partnering with you to continue advancing excellence in cancer care and research which will benefit our patients and their families – locally, regionally and nationally," White said, adding "I feel confident that UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center is your best hope for a cure."

Comprehensive status recognizes the level of outstanding care in a culture of scientific discovery, success in laboratory work that translates to use in the clinics and programs, research for better cancer outcomes and jobs and research partnerships to bolster the economy. The designation comes as construction is underway on a $19.4 million expansion of the cancer center in Marysville, nearly doubling its size to 42,000 square feet. There will be 11 more infusion bays, six more exam rooms, a second linear accelerator and a new PET CT scanner valued at more than $6 million.

"With the addition of the PET CT scanner, every aspect of cancer patient care can be handled right here, all under one roof," said Susan Vague, Administrator of the Rideout Cancer Center. "We can offer participation in clinical trials of new therapies and all patients get the latest in treatments and technology. Having such an advanced center right here in the Yuba-Sutter area means our patients can receive advanced cancer treatment without leaving their families and familiar surroundings. That's very important when you're battling this disease."

The regional demand for cancer care has driven the need for the expansion. In 2000, the first year that the Cancer Center opened its doors, 6,000 procedures were performed. Just a decade later the total for 2010 was 38,000 procedures. In 2010, the Cancer Center registered 800 new patients.
