Fremont-Rideout Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society Kick Off Public Awareness

Early detection is key to successful treatment

With screening and early detection, colon cancers can often be successfully treated and even prevented. Still, colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. when men and women are considered separately, and the second leading cause when both sexes are combined.

In order to raise awareness about the fact that regular screening greatly improves people's chances of a life free of colon cancer, or through discovery, treating the disease early will improve the chances of beating it. - FRHG and ACS are handing out free Hemoccult Screening Tests.

For adults 50+, from March 15 through March 19, free take-home tests will be provided at the Rideout Cancer Center,  618 5th Street in Marysville. All testing kits must be returned by March 26.

Colon cancer starts with a growth that is not yet cancer. Testing can help physicians find (and remove) these growths before they become cancerous. If the test finds that colon cancer has already developed, early detection will increase the chance of beating it.

According to Susan Vague, Director, F-R Cancer Center, "It is very wise to take advantage of this screening. It not only increases the likelihood of detecting cancers early at a curable stage, it can prevent the disease altogether by detecting precancerous polyps, which are common and cause no symptoms."

For more information about screening for colon cancer, please call 530-749-4400, ext. 1603 or visit .
