Fremont-Rideout Health Group’s Pediatric Patient Safety Record in Top 5% Nationwide

HealthGrades Study Finds Pediatric Patients have 30% Lower Risk of Patient-
Safety Events at Top Performing Hospitals

MARYSVILLE, CA (August 4, 2010) – Fremont Rideout Health Group’s Rideout Memorial Hospital is ranked in the top 5% in the nation in pediatric patient safety, according to a large-scale study of more than 2,000 hospitals in 19 states. The study, issued today by HealthGrades, the leading health care ratings organization, independently assessed five million patient records from 2006, 2007 and 2008 to identify hospitals that outperformed their peers based on objective criteria.

Hospitals like Rideout, with pediatric patient-safety records in the top 5% in the study, are recipients of the HealthGrades Pediatric Patient Safety Excellence Award™.

“For more than a centuryRideout Memorial Hospital and Fremont Medical Center have been passionately committed to providing the very best and safest care for pediatric patients, including emergency, surgical and medical care,”said Theresa Hamilton, CEO, Rideout Health Group. We’re proud of the recognition we’ve received from HealthGrades placing us in the top 5% of hospitals in the nation for Pediatric Patient Safety and we are committed to maintaining and improving our performance in the years ahead.”

The first annual HealthGrades Pediatric Patient Safety in American Hospitals Study employed indicators created by AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to assess the incidence, among hospitalization records, of the following eight pediatric patient-safety incidents:

·         Accidental puncture or laceration

·         Pressure ulcer

·         Avoidance of collapsed lung

·         Postoperative hemorrhage or hematoma

·         Postoperative respiratory failure

·                     Postoperative sepsis

·                     Postoperative wound dehiscence (wound-site breakdown)

·                     Central venous catheter-related infections

According to the study, these top-performing hospitals had a 29.48% lower risk, on average, of experiencing one or more of the eight patient-safety events compared with all other hospitals. If all hospitals performed at this level, approximately 6,532 pediatric patient-safety events could potentially have been avoided over the three years studied.

“There can be no more important mission than ensuring that hospitalized children are kept safe from harm,” said Rick May, MD, vice president of clinical quality improvement services at HealthGrades and a co-author of the study. “This study identifies hospitals that are among the very best in the nation in terms of avoiding in-hospital errors that can endanger pediatric patients.”

Fremont Rideout Health Group, including Rideout Memorial Hospital and Fremont Medical Center has a history of outstanding clinical outcomes in Maternity Care and now Pediatric Patient Safety. Last month, Fremont Rideout was recognized by HealthGrades as a recipient of a 5 Star rating in Maternity Care for the third year in a row (2008/2009-2010/2011). In fact, Fremont Rideout is one of four hospitals in California to be a recipient of the Pediatric Patient Safety Excellence Award and 5 Star Rated in Maternity Care in the same year.

The 19 state governments that make pediatric patient records available for analysis are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
