Emergency Department Expansion On The Horizon

Last week, the Emergency Department at Rideout Memorial Hospital began its tenth year of operation as a Level III Trauma Center, the only trauma center between Chico and Roseville, Sacramento or Davis.

This week, plans for Phase One of a two-phase expansion of the department were approved by the Rideout Board of Directors. Construction will begin this coming summer.

"When our Emergency Department was last expanded - just a few years before our Trauma Center status became official - it was designed to accommodate approximately 25,000 visits per year," stated Terri Hamilton, CEO, Rideout Health Group. "For the past several years, we have been treating more than double that number of patients. Those 55,000 annual visits mean we now see an average of 150 ER visitors a day, 365 days a year; six per hour, 24 hours a day, We need more space."

The expansion of the Emergency Department will add an additional triage room and 13 multi-use ED/Observation beds for a total of 39.  The Rideout Foundation will lead a capital campaign to help support the investment of the $6.2 million needed for this vital project.

"The existing RMH Emergency Department is a vital resource for our community," said Carol Ramirez, VP Community Relations, Marketing & Foundation.

"This project is all about helping our community, and we are counting on the community's support to help us reach our expansion goals. We'll have news about our upcoming Capital Improvement Campaign in the coming days. The expansion will better serve our communities needs now and for future generations for many years to come."

As one of only 45 trauma centers in the entire state of California with a Level I, II or III designation, FRHG has an exceptional duty not only to our nearest neighbors but to a larger population for whom the facility can mean the difference between life and death. This expansion and the other upcoming enhancements to the RMH campus will help FRHG to better serve our community and deliver on its mission - and obligation - to provide quality medical care to all who need it. And, it will provide FRHG staff with a facility that does justice to their extraordinary skills and dedication.
