Prior to joining Rideout, Ms. Burns spent eight years with Southwest Healthcare System in southern California, a subsidiary of Universal Health Services, a Fortune 500 health facility management company. Joining in 2006, she first served as director of emergency services and then as director of nursing. In 2010 she was named Associate Chief Nursing Officer. During her tenure, she helped lead Southwest to the successful implementation of a plan of correction under a Systems Improvement Agreement. She was promoted to CNO of Inland Valley Medical Center in March 2013. Prior to her association with Southwest, Ms. Burns joined Scripps Mercy Hospital in 1988 and assumed her first leadership position in 1996. In 2005 she was appointed Director of Clinical Operations.
"I feel honored and excited to take on this new role as COO. Rideout Health is a wonderful organization with caring and professional health care staff and physicians. I have been privileged to lead the nursing division for the past fifteen-months and I look forward to leading the organization and playing an influential role in shaping Rideout's future – now and in the years ahead," said Melissa Burns.
After receiving her first nursing degree in 1988 from the University of Southern California Medical Center's School of Nursing in Los Angeles, Ms. Burns earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at California State University, Dominguez Hills and her Master of Science in Nursing Administration with honors, from San Diego State University.
