Recent survey shows few Americans recognize symptoms of a disease that struck more
than 100,000 people last year alone in the United States
Marysville, March 21, 2014, Rideout Cancer Center, In Partnership with UC Davis
and the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance (HNCA) announce Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week® (OHANCAW), April 20-26, 2014, an annual initiative to increase public knowledge of the signs, symptoms and risk factors associated with oral, head and neck cancer and provide the public with access to free screenings.
According to results of a survey fielded online among over 2,100 U.S. adults by Harris Interactive on behalf of the HNCA in January 2013, 64 percent of Americans are not knowledgeable about oral head and neck cancer, and over 7 in 10 (71 percent) say that they have not been examined by a medical professional for the disease. Only 13 percent of Americans know that human papillomavirus (HPV) – the same virus that causes cervical cancer – is now associated with throat cancer.
Locally, Rideout Cancer Center will be offering free oral cancer screenings during OHANCAW.
• The free oral cancer screening will be held at Rideout Cancer Center, 618 5th Street in Marysville, CA, from 8-10am on Monday, April 21, 2014 and will take approximately 10 minutes.
• Dr. Ben Counihan, DDS will be performing the examinations.
• Appointments can be made by calling Lorna at 530 751-4270, ext. 1603.
Bristol-Myers Squibb has provided funding for free screenings as part of the company's support of OHANCAW. For more information on screening locations, please visit the OHANCAW website at www.headandneck.org
