FYI:

  • ANGIOPLASTY is a non-surgical procedure which requires a short hospital stay, designed to widen narrowed coronary arteries. The widening is done by a balloon catheter inflated in the coronary artery, allowing the blood to flow more easily.
  • ROTATIONAL ATHERECTOMY, an alternative to open-heart surgery and angioplasty, takes place in a cardiac catherization lab, where a cardiologist monitors progress of the procedure. Unlike angioplasty, where the plaque clogging the artery wall is pushed aside, a special device cuts and removes lesions (plaque) to reopen a channel for blood flow.
  • OPEN HEART SURGERY is recommended for patients with blockage of the coronary arteries that cannot be treated medically or with angioplasty or rotational atherectomy.

SURGERIES

Cardiac: Cardiac Surgery services continue to remain on the leading edge. The foundation of cardiac surgery is coronary artery bypass grafting with the use of autologue artery and saphenous vein grafts, soon to offer two incisions to harvest saphenous vein with use of endovascular harvest equipment.

All types of surgeries are offered, including valve replacement and valve repair with excellent results. Ventricular aneurysm resection/repair and electrophysiological surgery for treatment of atrial fibrillation are performed, as well as, myotomy and myectomy for idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis.

Thoracic: Also performed are all types of thoracic surgeries including lung cancer and esophageal cancer resections with all types of thoracic work for both malignant and benign lesions in the chest. New is a didactic session that offers a multi disciplinary approach for discussion of all types of thoracic patients, which will provide the optimal care for the patient, both in open and minimally invasive approaches taken for thoracic surgery.

Vascular: Surgical repair in the area includes carotid arterial surgery along with all types of ascending and descending aneurismal work, including that of the abdominal aorta. Open communication is of special importance here at the Heart Center.

Referring Physicians: Prior to any consulation of the patient, physicians are welcome to call if they have any questions in their regard that pertains to cardiac, thoracic or vascular cases. This allows for optimal care to the patient at the same time listening to the needs of both the referring physicians and the patient.
